THE BLACK SEED

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE BLACK SEED

History of the Black Seed
For over two thousand years the black seed, a plant from the Ranunculaceae (buttercup) family, has been traditionally used by various cultures throughout the world as a natural remedy for several diseases and ailments and to improve health in general.

The ancient Egyptians knew and used the black seed and described it as a panacea (cure for problems and diseases). Tutankamun even had a bottle of the oil in his tomb!

The Romans also knew this seed and called it Greek Coriander and used it as a dietary supplement.

In the first century, the Greek physician Dioscoredes recorded that the black seed were taken to treat headaches, nasal congestion, toothache and intestinal worms.

The black seed is also mentioned in the Bible in Isiah 28:25-27 as the ‘fitches’. Ibn Senna, known in the West as Avicenna, who wrote the great medical treatise 'The Canon of Medicine', referred to the black seed as the seed ‘that stimulates the body's energy and helps recovery from fatigue’.

Eating in Seven Intestines

Narrated Nafi: Ibn Umar never used to take his meal unless a poor man was called to eat with him. One day I brought a poor man to eat with him. The man ate way too much, whereupon Ibn Umar said, "O Nafi! Don't let this man enter my house, for I heard the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) saying, 'A believer eats in one intestine (is satisfied with a little food), and a kafir (disbeliever) eats in seven intestines (eats much food)." [Sahih Bukhari]

In other ahadith hypocrites are mentioned, along with Kuffar, as eating in seven intestines. The reality of the matter is that hypocrites are also Kuffar. The difference is that hypocrites pretend to be Muslims and only Allah knows their reality, while the reality of those who openly disbelieve (Kuffar) is known to all.

We can note from this hadith that the illustrious Sahabah did not even like hypocrites to enter their homes, so distasteful was their hypocrisy to the pious and so distant did they want to stay from the evil of hypocrisy.

It also makes sense, when we learn of such ahadith, why Muslim parents tell their children not to eat too much at others homes and avoid doing so themselves too.

Pick up the Food you Drop

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “When a morsel of any of you falls, he should pick it up and remove any of the dirt on it and then eat it, and should not leave it for Shaitaan...” [Sahih Muslim]

This hadith tells us to pick up a fallen dry morsel of food and eat it after brushing off any dirt that might be on it. This is an expression of humility and also prevents Shaitaan from deriving blessings from our food.

Present-day Muslims hardly care for this directive of the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) thinking that picking up dropped food will bring disgrace and dishonour upon them. To make matters worse, some even throw away unconsumed food in the garbage, while others deem it necessary to leave a little food in their plates as a sign of their manners or affluence! How far the Muslim community has departed from the teachings and excellent example of their Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam)!

Rise and Fall of Muslim Scientists

Ibrahim B. Syed, Ph. D.
INTRODUCTION

The rise of the Muslims to the zenith of civilization in a period of four decades was based on Al-Islam's emphasis on learning. This is obvious when one takes a look at the Qur'an and the traditions of Prophet Muhammad(SAS) which are filled with references to learning, education, observation, and the use of Reason. The very first verse of the Qur'an revealed to the Prophet Of Al-Islam (SAS) on the night of power (Laylathul Qadr) in the month of Ramadan in 611 AD reads:

"Read: In the name of thy Lord who created man from a clot.

Read: And they Lord is the Most Generous Who taught by the pen,

Taught man that which he knew not." Surah Al-Alaq, 96:1-5

"And they shall say had we but listened or used reason, we

Would not among the inmates of the burning fire." Al Mulk, 67:10

"Are those who have knowledge and those who have no knowledge

Alike? Only the men of understanding are mindful." Al Zumar, 39:9.

The Qur'an exhorts the Muslims to do scientific research:

" And whoso bringeth the truth and believeth therein such are

the dutiful." Surah Al Zumar, 39:33

Every Muslim man's and every Muslim woman's prayer should be:

"My Lord! Enrich me with knowledge." Surah TA HA, 20:114.

The pursuit of knowledge and the use of reason, based on sense

of observation is made obligatory on every Muslim man and woman.

The following traditions of the Prophet(SAS) supplement the

foregoing teachings of the Qur'an in the following way:

(1) Seek knowledge "even though it be in China."

(2) "The acquisition of knowledge is compulsory for every

Muslim, whether male or female."

(3) "The ink of the scholar is more sacred than the blood of

the martyr."

(4) "Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave."

(5) "God has revealed to me, 'Whoever walks in the pursuit of

knowledge I facilitate for him the way to heaven.'

(6) "The best form of worship is the pursuit of knowledge."

(7) "Scholars should endeavor to spread knowledge and provide

education to people who have been deprived of it. For,

where knowledge is hidden it disappears."

(8) Some one asked the Prophet(SAS): "Who is the biggest

scholar?" He replied: "He who is constantly trying to

learn from others, for a scholar is every hungry for more

knowledge."

(9) "Seek for knowledge and wisdom, for whatever the vessel

from which it flows, you will never be the loser."

(10) "Thinking deep for one hour(with sincerity) is better

than 70 years of (mechanical) worship."

(11) "Worship without knowledge, has no goodness in it and

knowledge without understanding has no goodness in it.

And the recitation of the Qur'an, which is not thoughtful

has no goodness in it."

(12) "To listen to the words of the learned and to instill

unto others the lessons of science is better than

religious exercises."

(13) "Acquire knowledge: it enables its possessor to

distinguish right from the wrong, it lights the way to

heaven; it is our friend in the desert, our society in

solitude, our companion when friendless; it guides us

to happiness; it sustains us in misery; it is an ornament

among friends and an armor against enemies."

Ways to Improve Digestion

Ways to Improve Digestion

Correctly combining foods is associated with considerably improving digestion. Good digestion is crucial for our long-term health and well-being. If we don't digest and absorb nutrients from our food properly, every bodily function can be affected.

Digestion is not just about getting food in and out; it is the absorption and assimilation of nutrients for the nourishment of the whole body, as well as construction and repair of cells.

Food combining has been found to improve digestive malfunctions like indigestion, heartburn, bloating, constipation and flatulence, as well as easing symptoms of more complicated gut disorders like irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, colon cancer, etc.

Many of these problems are often related to food in some way, and can be resolved by watching what we eat and how we eat it.

Be Useful: Live Longer

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "Nothing keeps away the decree (of Allah) except prayer, and nothing increases the life (of man) except goodness; and man is only denied the provisions (of life) because of sins upon which he falls." [Ibn Majah] "Almsgiving extinguishes the wrath of Allah." [Tirmidhi]

This hadith tells us many important things:

1. If we want to prevent misfortunes, accidents, and bad things in general from happening to us, we should make dua. Dua alone has the power to stall some misfortune that was decreed to befall us.
2. If we want to live longer, then we should practice what Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) defines as goodness.
3. If we want our rizq/provisions to increase, we should not commit sins.
4. If we don't want to be punished by Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) for our sins, we should give sadaqa/charity.

Research suggests that those who spend 4-6 hours in various voluntary activities weekly live 6-8 years longer than those who don't. This is one of the benefits of helping others that modern research has revealed. There are hundreds of other benefits. Make yourself useful so that Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) may let you live a few more years to serve His creation. [30 Second Successories by Faiez H. Seyal]

BJP, others playing dirty politics: Tipu’s descendant

Kolkata, Nov 12 : A descendant of Tipu Sultan on Thursday accused the BJP and other outfits of playing “dirty politics” over the erstwhile Mysore ruler’s birth anniversary celebrations and said he would seek Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the matter.

Shahzada Anwar Ali Shah, a descendant of Tipu Sultan, also lambasted the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad for “maligning the country’s image internationally by portraying the monarch as a tyrant and intolerant”.

“It’s not only unfortunate but dangerous that certain representatives of the BJP, VHP and other fringe groups are playing dirty politics over Tipu Sultan, who was one of the first freedom fighters in the country,” Shah told IANS.

“On one hand, Modi is visiting foreign countries and presenting India as an ideal destination for investments, and on the other, his own party people are maligning the country’s image by trying to distort history and give a bad name to a historical icon,” said Shah, who lives in the city’s Tollygunge area.

Uniting Humanity

The message of Islam is for the entire human race. According to Islam, Allah is the God of the entire world and Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is a messenger for the whole of mankind.

According to Islam, all men are equal, whatever be their color, language, race or nationality. Islam addresses itself to the conscience of humanity and banishes all false barriers of race, status and wealth. There can be no denying the fact that such barriers have always existed, and do exist even today in this so-called enlightened age. Islam, however, removes all these impediments and proclaims the idea of the whole of humanity being one family of God.
