Israeli attack on Gaza flotilla, UK’s slow response condemned

By TCN News,
New Delhi: The Israeli attack on the convoy of ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza early Monday is being widely condemned. At least 19 passengers were reportedly killed in the attack. Slow British reaction to the attack even when the fate of 28 Britons among some 700 passengers on the humanitarian flotilla remains unknown has also been condemned.
The Gaza Freedom Flotilla, a humanitarian flotilla of eight ships carrying 10,000 tons was attacked by Israeli commandoes in international water early Monday. 19 people have been killed, 10 of them Turkish and 26 injured, according to Israeli military sources. The Muslim countries have condemned the killings and demonstrations have been held in Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and more are expected later today.

The UK based The Muslim News has criticised the slow reaction by the British Foreign Office, while countries like Spain, Sweden, Turkey and Greece have summoned Israeli ambassadors and the EU has called for an immediate inquiry.
“Our Embassy officials are seeking urgent clarification into the incident,” was all an official spokesman of the British Government was prepared to say when challenged about the attack that killed up to 19 passengers and injured some 30 others.
“If such a raid was carried out by Iran, the Government would have condemned it outright. There was no concern shown for the safety of the 28 British citizens on board the ships by the FCO,” The Muslim News Editor Ahmed J Versi said. “One would have expected the Coalition Government to have been more forthright, especially since the Liberal Democrats usually spoke out against Israeli atrocities when they were in opposition.”
Meanwhile, France, Germany, Turkey, Ireland, Arab League and European Union have condemned the Israeli attack on the humanitarian aid activists.
French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouch said he was “profoundly shocked” at the killings. The European Union's Foreign Policy chief, Catherine Ashton, has called on Israeli authorities to launch a 'full inquiry' into the killing.
Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said he was 'deeply concerned about the events last night in the waters off Gaza... these are disconcerting initial reports.'
Turkey's foreign ministry warned of 'irreparable consequences' after the incident. Some of the ships were sailing under Turkish flags and media reports indicate that Turkish nationals are among the dead.
'By targeting civilians, Israel has once again shown its disregard for human life and peaceful initiatives. We strongly condemn these inhumane practices of Israel,' the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Irish Foreign Minister Michael Martin has already expressed “grave concern” following Israel’s massacre with eight Irish nationals among the passengers. 'The reports of up to 15 people killed and 50 injured, if confirmed, would constitute a totally unacceptable response by the Israeli military to what was a humanitarian mission attempting to deliver much needed supplies to the people of Gaza,' Martin said.
The Arab League will be holding an emergency meeting on June 1 on the killings.
The humanitarian flotilla of eight ships was carrying 10,000 tons of aid which is attempting to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip.
The Muslim News has provided the list of British citizens on Mavi Marmara where the Israeli raid took place and 19 of the passengers killed: Laura Macdonald Stuart, Ebrahim Musaji, Jamal Sayed, Parveen Yaqub, Baboo Adem Zanghar, Ahsan Shamruk, Mustafa Cengiz Ahmet, Tauqir Sharif, Boudjema Bounoua, Mohammad Bounoua, Sakir Yildirim, Kenneth O’Keefe, Ali El-Awaisi, Mohammed Bhaiyat, Lort Phillips Alexandra Mary, Sarah Nancy Colborne, Ismail Adam Patel, Nader Daher, Mahi Mohammed Abid,
Nur-E-Azom Choudhury, Ovenden Kevin, Peter Venner, Clifford Gardner Hanley, Muzzammil Layth Chogley, Jamaluddin Mohammad Farid Elshayyal, Hassan Al Banna Ghani, Lazrag Salah, Ali Altan,

There will be a peaceful protest outside 10 Downing Street at 2pm today against the British Government’s silence over the killings and calling on the Government for an “immediate intervention”.
Another demonstration is being held in Manchester at the BBC on Oxford Road at 5pm.

Uprooted Palestinians: A letter from the heart of a Muslim woman

Dear friends
I am writing this letter to you because of the devastation that is caused by your government in our lands, and because of the immanent threat to world peace that I see your government pushing for, again.
The way things are moving now, I foresee great danger, and terrible risk to peace and security to the whole world.
I am writing to you because I care very much about humanity and I love our planet, with all its inhabitants.

I am writing to you because I believe in civilised dialogues, where people can express themselves freely, without being patronized, silenced, ridiculed, imprisoned or even killed for their beliefs.

I am writing to you to build bridges not walls, and to take you on a short journey so you may see things from our perspective.

I am writing to you for the purpose of advancing more realistic and humanistic understanding and for trying together to achieve a more tolerant and peaceful world.

Dilemmas of Muslims Living in the New Age

By Maulana Wahiduddin Khan,
The Biggest Problem of Muslims Today
The biggest problem facing Muslims today is that they still do not know that they are living in a new age. They have no idea of the implications of this. Their leaders, and they themselves, still cling to centuries’-old mindset which is totally out of date. Because of this, they are unfit for the new age. This is also true for the majority of Muslims who live in the West, because they share the same mindset. They may have studied in Western universities but their mindset is almost identical, and this is reflected in what they read, think and talk about in their homes. They wish to impose this old mindset on everyone else. Of course, this is impossible and is nothing but day-dreaming and wishful thinking.
The old mindset of Muslims, which is still so deeply-rooted even today, was a product of an authoritarian political system. Today, we live in an age of democracy, and so we need a total revolution in our way of thinking. For thousands of years, kings ruled, and so popular culture was also authoritarian. There was a single king and the rest of the people were his subjects. There was a single master, and the rest of the people were his slaves or servants. A radical break occurred in the seventh century, with the advent of the Prophet Muhammad. The Quran talked about democratic decision-making, about what is called shura. This represented a veritable revolution. However, the Arabs and others who later embraced Islam were mentally not prepared for the democracy that the Quran heralded. Their minds were deeply moulded for many centuries before the advent of the Prophet by authoritarian culture, and this could not be changed overnight after conversion to Islam. That is why the democratic notion of Khilafat was soon subverted, and, although the term was still used, it became a cover up for authoritarian monarchy after the period of the ‘Four Rightly guided Caliphs’. And so, in the name of Khilafat various despotic Sultans ruled over Muslim lands. This was the case everywhere—under the Abbasids and Umayyads, under the Mughals, under the Arab rulers of Spain. The word of the Sultan was the law, and anyone who dared to oppose him was summarily killed.
Why Muslim Countries Lack Democracy
Because of this, democratic culture was never able to prosper in Muslim lands, although this was precisely the intent of the Quran. This continues to be the case even today. Scores of Muslim countries style themselves as ‘democracies’ but they are nothing of the sort at all. In actual fact, they are all dictatorships. Not a single of the 57 member states of the Organisation of Islamic Conference is a democracy in the real sense of the word. One reason for this is that self-styled Islamic ideologues wrongly insist that democracy is ‘un-Islamic’. This claim is not true at all. I see no contradiction between Islam and democracy.
Belief is the real part of Islam but politics is only relative. So far as belief is concerned Muslims should follow the eternal teachings of Islam as it is. So far as politics is concerned, it should be left to the democratic process. Free and fair elections should be held after the completion of each term and the elected candidate should be allowed to complete the term and given full opportunity to govern. According to my study of Islam this is in full conformity with Islamic teachings.
The democratic principle of shura that the Quran stressed took centuries to culminate. This happened not in a Muslim country, however, but in France, in the wake of the French Revolution. Islam had started this process of democracy, of revolt against dictatorship, but the process culminated in a non-Muslim country. It did not happen in a Muslim country because for centuries Muslim culture had remained deeply authoritarian and inimical to democracy, which is a complete contradiction of the Quranic spirit.

Democracy is based on the notion of equal rights for all. In a democracy, the Prime Minister has, in theory, the same citizenship rights as a commoner. This is a complete contradiction of monarchy. Lamentably, Muslims have not been able to accept this basic principle of democracy. They want rights for themselves which they are unwilling to let others enjoy.
A democracy is characterized by a culture of give-and-take. Authoritarian monarchical culture is based on taking without giving. This is the basic problem of Muslims today. They want to take but not to give. They demand rights and privileges for themselves but do not want to give these to others or to allow them, too, to enjoy these rights. In this way, they end up denying themselves the many opportunities and spaces that democracy could otherwise provide them with.
Let me clarify this issue with the help of an example. Just the other day, the Government of Pakistan imposed a ban on the social networking site Facebook because it carried a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad. Now, I don’t know much about computers but I believe that Facebook is a great blessing, a wonderful means of communicating where you can convey your message throughout the world at no cost at all. In fact, my team at the Centre for Peace and Spirituality uses it almost every day to send out our messages. It is truly a great blessing.
Democracy means that everyone has the same rights. When it comes to Facebook, Muslims have as much right to use it as do others. If Muslims want to use Facebook or any other form of communications to convey the message of Islam to the world (as I and my team are doing), they cannot stop others from using it.
Islam teaches us to search for and use opportunities and to ignore the problems. Facebook provides us with such great opportunities to convey the message of Islam to others. Naturally, some people might misuse it, as they have in this case, but the right approach is not ban Facebook and to create a huge hue and cry. The misuse of Facebook cannot be stopped. It is best left ignored, while Muslims should creatively use the same technology for their own purpose of explaining the truth of Islam to others. If Muslims have the right to propagate Islam, others too have the right to propagate their views, no matter how different they may be to ours. We cannot seek to ban them from speaking.
Let me clarify this with the help of a personal example. Some years ago, I was in Lucknow, where I met a scholar of Hindu background, who was something of an atheist. He argued that if the Prophet Muhammad had not been born it would have made no difference to human history. Now, had some other Muslim been in my place he might have got inflamed by such a remark. He might even have resorted to violence. But I did not react in this way. After all, just as I had the right and freedom to speak, so did he. Instead of getting angry, I turned my attention to researching the life of the Prophet Muhammad, on the basis of which I wrote two books in Urdu ‘Islam Aur Daur-e Jadid Ka Khaliq’ and ‘Paighambar-e Inqilab’, which were later translated into English as ‘Islam: The Creator of the Modern Age’ and ‘The Prophet of Revolution’ respectively. These books proved to be immensely popular.
Had I responded to the Lucknow scholar with violence or agitation, as is the common Muslim response to provocation I would not have been able to write these books and thereby influence so many people with my arguments. Had I reacted negatively by becoming angry, this would have further reinforced his negative views of Muslims. This is not the Islamic way of doing things. After all, even in the Prophet’s time his opponents said bad things about him, but he never reacted by ordering that they should be forcibly silenced or killed. Unfortunately, as the Facebook controversy in Pakistan shows, Muslims have not learnt the democratic, which is also the truly Islamic, means to resolving contentious issues. Hence, they create even more problems for themselves and for others.
Sadly, this is not what Pakistani Muslims or the Pakistani Government chose to do. Instead, they overreacted, banning Facebook, thus effectively denying to themselves the wonderful possibilities that this technology provides of conveying the true message of Islam to others. At the root of this is the authoritarian mindset of Muslims which is ill at ease with the demands of the democratic age. This is causing them to face grave problems, while also further reinforcing negative stereotypical images about Islam and Muslims in the minds of non-Muslims.
Let me clarify my point about the lack of democratic culture proving to be a cause of serious damage to Muslims themselves with the help of the case of Iraq today. Iraq was ruled by Saddam Hussain, a military dictator, for over two decades. He came to power not through democratic means but, rather, through a military coup. He continued to stay in power through rigged elections that made a complete mockery of democracy. After supporting him for several years, America began to feel that its interests were being harmed by him and so decided to unseat him in order to bring democracy to Iraq. It asked Saddam to step down, for free elections to be held and for a new elected government to come to power. The Iraqi ulema ought to have agreed to this proposal—after all, dictatorship is un-Islamic and genuine democracy is supported by Islam. They ought to have given a fatwa in favour of democracy and called for the end to Saddam’s un-Islamic dictatorship. However, they did not do so largely because democracy is against their mindset, the same authoritarian and thoroughly un-Islamic mindset that millions of other Muslims share. Had they lent their support to democratic elections by issuing fatwas to that effect, thereby facilitating Saddam’s exit and his replacement by a democratically elected leader, it is likely that Iraq would have been spared the horrors that it has had to witness in the course of the American invasion of that country.
It is sad but true that, because of this mindset, most Muslims simply cannot fit comfortably in the democratic age. They still mentally live in the age of authoritarian kingship. Some of them even believe that they should rule the entire world and that no one else has the right to rule. They believe that they alone are right and everybody else is wholly wrong. Needless to say, such thinking is a complete affront to democracy. This attitude is a major cause for negative feelings and attitudes towards Muslims on the part of others. One can safely say that it is not non-Muslims but Muslims themselves who are their own greatest foes.
Barring, of course, the primary sources of Islam, almost all the literature that we Muslims read today is based on this authoritarian model. Scores of self-styled ‘Islamic’ ideologues, pen-pushers and poets also peddle a completely distorted, highly authoritarian and wholly anti-democratic interpretation of Islam that has nothing to do with Islam as it really is. This is based on the notion, wholly unwarranted in Islam, that only Muslims have the right to rule and that the rest of humanity must remain subordinated to them, that Muslims must be emperors and others their subjects. With a mindset like that, how at all can Muslims live in today’s new, democratic age?
In the meanwhile, non-Muslims are going ahead and adjusting very well to the demands of the new age and are willing to listen to other views. Just the other day I was invited to a Hindu-run college to speak on Islam. When my team requested the manager of the college if they could distribute copies of the English translation of the Quran that we have prepared, he was delighted, and we were able to give scores of copies of the Quran to the almost entirely Hindu audience, who very happily and willingly accepted them. We are often invited by Hindu organizations to talk about Islam and we have never had any negative experiences with them. In fact, most of the Hindus we have met are sincerely interested in our work and are more than willing to cooperate with us, because they believe that truth has many dimensions. The contrast with the authoritarian, dictatorial and anti-democratic Muslim mindset is really stark.
In today’s age those who can creatively adjust to and champion democracy will survive and flourish. Those who consistently oppose it are fated to remain misfits in the present world. This is what is happening with the Muslims today. Their own anti-democratic attitudes are responsible for their bad image in the eyes of the rest of the world. They continue to cling to the old, authoritarian model, based on the notion of a single dictatorial leader and of subjects who have no right to express their views. Muslims want the right to speak and preach, but are unwilling to let others, too, enjoy the same right. This approach of theirs is in fundamental contradiction to democracy. It is this that lies at the root of the widespread and deep-rooted intellectual crisis of Muslim thought today. Unless the Muslim mind is changed, intellectual crisis will become even more acute with every passing day.
Muslims regard democracy as un-Islamic, but this is not true at all. Today, democracy has resulted in the creation of numerous opportunities to serve Islam, rather than hinder it, contrary to what Islamist ideologues assert. In today’s age, opportunities have been decentralized, no longer centrally controlled by kings. Power is also becoming increasingly decentralized, and governance is transforming itself into administration. This is all a result of democracy. According to a Hadith report, before the end of the world, the word of God would be brought to every home. The possibility of this happening is very real today with the development of new means of communications, such as Facebook, which, as I pointed out, instead of using to spread the word of God, the uninitiated in Pakistan are seeking to ban. But it is God who is creating these new possibilities for His word to enter every home—through new means of communications, freedom of speech and expression and democracy, which allow people to choose whatever religion they wish to follow. Lamentably, Muslims do not understand the wonderful possibilities of dawah that democracy, free expression and exchange of views and modern communications afford. Instead, they keep complaining against them, thus doing the greatest damage to the dawah mission. Instead of imbibing the spirit of democracy and relating to other people in a friendly and loving manner, which is essential for dawah, they brand them as ‘enemies’ and ‘conspirators’, thus further alienating them from Islam and creating a bad image of themselves and of Islam as well. Ignoring, or even denying, the wonderful opportunities that democracy has opened for us to engage in dawah, they are actually going against God’s will.
Another reason why Muslims are proving to be failures in adjusting to the realities of the new age is their tendency only to react to events or developments, without a positive agenda of their own. Just the other day, a big delegation of some self-styled Muslim ‘leaders’ went to meet the Indian Prime Minister with a long charter of demands, asking for this and that. What blindness is this that they completely ignore the wonderful opportunities that God has bestowed on us in this modern age—such as freedom of thought, democracy, global interaction and methods of instant communications that are great blessings for us to engage in our principal task of dawah—and all they can think of is the few reserved jobs, for instance, that the Prime Minister can provide them with, if at all! They can see the Prime Minister, but they totally ignore the wonderful possibilities that God has opened up to us through democracy for dawah. Instead of cherishing and using these possibilities, they are simply running after a few dozen jobs! What a tragedy!
I constantly appeal to Muslims not to get provoked by inflammatory remarks or writings. That is neither the democratic nor the Islamic way of reacting. I appeal to them to exercise patience, what is called sabr in the language of the Quran. Some critics blame me of thereby seeking to turn Muslims into cowards, but this is completely wrong. They do not understand what sabr actually means. In fact, sabr is a form of great wisdom. It entails ignoring the problems and using the opportunities that any situation affords. If Pakistani Muslims won’t exercise sabr in the face of the cartoons on Facebook, if they do not ignore this problem and, instead, focus on the wonderful possibilities of dawah that Facebook provides, they will only be harming themselves and the dawah cause, which should be their principal concern.
It is a natural law that problems will always remain. God has given human beings the capacity of choice—to do good or bad—and this freedom of choice can be misused to create problems. A foolish person is he who remains obsessed with the problems, real and imaginary, that he faces and hence is rendered incapable of taking advantage of the opportunities that the situation also provides. This is how Muslims typically behave. On the other hand, a wise person is he who ignores the problems he faces, is undeterred by them, and who instead focuses on the available opportunities. This is a positive formula. Unfortunately, although this is a basic Islamic principle, Muslims have failed to learn this basic truth. Scores of self-styled Islamic ideologues are completely ignorant of this principle.
My whole active life has been spent trying to reform the authoritarian Muslim mindset, which is a complete contradiction of the democratic Islamic ethos. For this task I have had to face much opposition from Muslims but I continue my work undeterred, even in this old age of mine. Yet, I have not given up hope. It is a natural law that, like individuals, communities also go through various phases—birth, adolescence, maturity, old age and decline. Muslims have passed through these stages and are presently in the state of decline. All communities pass through this cycle, and Muslims are no exception to this rule. But it is also true that a community in decline need not be in that state forever. It can be rejuvenated again. This is what I have been trying to do all these decades.

Dilemmas of Muslims Living in the New Age

Masjid Al-Aqsa

Masjid Al-Aqsa

Allah, the Exalted, says concerning Al-Aqsa Mosque: Whereof We have blessed: meaning Jerusalem. Jerusalem’s geographic location is 35º longitude and 31º latitude.

Jerusalem is one of the most ancient cities in the world; dating back to 3000 B.C. Located in Jerusalem is Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is the second ancient mosque after the Sacred Mosque in Mecca. Al-Bukhari and other narrators of Hadith reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked: “Which mosque was built first on earth?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “The Sacred Mosque (in Mecca).” He was asked again: “Then which mosque comes next?” He replied: “Al-Aqsa Mosque.” He was then asked: “How long was the period between their construction?” He replied: “Forty years.”

Islam entered Jerusalem after the defeat of the Romans at Al-Yarmuk Battle that paved the way to Jerusalem. `Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Caliph `Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) to come to Jerusalem because its people refused to give in the city to anyone other than the Caliph in person. In 636A.D./15A.H., `Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Jerusalem and guaranteed their safety and security. He pledged to safeguard their lives, properties and Churches, and to ban the Jews from living among them. `Umar granted Jerusalem inmates freedom of religion in exchange of paying Jizyah (tribute). He refused to observe prayer in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher so that Muslims may not follow his deed. He then went to the place of Al-Aqsa Mosque, cleaned the Rock and built a mosque at the southern corner.

Al-Aqsa Mosque enjoys a great status in Islam. It is the first of the two Qiblas (direction faced in Prayer). The Prophet (peace be upon him) faced Al-Aqsa Mosque in Prayer for 17 months, then Allah ordered him to face the Sacred Mosque.

From Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Prophet (peace be upon him) ascended to heaven after he was taken in a night journey from the Sacred Mosque to Al-Aqsa Mosque and after he led all the Prophets in Prayer.

Throughout Islamic history, Muslim Caliphs and leaders assigned great interest to this blessed city. In 691A.D./72A.H., and under the reign of the Umayyads, Abdul-Malik bin Marwan built the Dome of the Rock. A few years later, Al-Walid bin Abdul-Malik restored Al-Aqsa Mosque. Abbasids preserved this concern till the phase of decline of the Muslim State. For almost 100 year, crusaders occupied Al-Aqsa Mosque till Salah Al-Din Al-Aiyubi freed it.

Under the shade of the Ottomans, Jerusalem was well taken care of. It remained secure till the downfall of the Ottomans and the Muslim Caliphate. The Jews occupied Jerusalem, and till now, it remains under Zionist occupation.

The Interview With God Poem

I dreamed I had an interview with God.

“So you would like to interview me?” God asked.

“If you have the time” I said.

God smiled. “My time is eternity.”
“What questions do you have in mind for me?”

“What surprises you most about humankind?”

God answered...
“That they get bored with childhood,
they rush to grow up, and then
long to be children again.”

“That they lose their health to make money...
and then lose their money to restore their health.”

“That by thinking anxiously about the future,
they forget the present,
such that they live in neither
the present nor the future.”

"That they live as if they will never die,
and die as though they had never lived.”

God’s hand took mine
and we were silent for a while.

And then I asked...
“As a parent, what are some of life’s lessons
you want your children to learn?”

“To learn they cannot make anyone
love them. All they can do
is let themselves be loved.”

“To learn that it is not good
to compare themselves to others.”

“To learn to forgive
by practicing forgiveness.”

“To learn that it only takes a few seconds
to open profound wounds in those they love,
and it can take many years to heal them.”

“To learn that a rich person
is not one who has the most,
but is one who needs the least.”

“To learn that there are people
who love them dearly,
but simply have not yet learned
how to express or show their feelings.”

“To learn that two people can
look at the same thing
and see it differently.”

“To learn that it is not enough that they
forgive one another, but they must also forgive themselves.”

"Thank you for your time," I said humbly.

"Is there anything else
you would like your children to know?"

God smiled and said,
“Just know that I am here... always.”

Why You Should Use Sleep Mode

Shutting down your PC at the end of the day is so 20th century. What you probably should be doing is putting it into sleep mode. You'll save that interminable wait for your system to boot up, and it won't destroy the Earth or your bank account with a dramatic change in energy usage. Allow me to illustrate.
I have a fairly high-end system at home. It's a Core i7 920 based PC with 6GB of RAM, a high-end GeForce card (sometimes it's a Radeon, I go back and forth), and a reasonably quick Seagate 7200.10 hard drive. I'm running the final release of Windows 7. This is how long it takes me to shut down and boot:
Shutdown: 0:16
Boot: 1:06
Shutting down is pretty fast, but booting up is painfully slow. Bear in mind, this is what I call "true" boot-up time. It the time from when I press the power button to when I'm at a usable desktop (where you can actually click on things and get a response). Like your system probably is, it's not totally clean. I have Dropbox and my antivirus software loading at boot. Here's the numbers to go into sleep mode, and wake from sleep:
Sleep: 0:18
Wake: 0:02
That's right two seconds to get to a truly usable desktop waking from sleep mode. Shutting down takes a couple seconds longer, but waking my computer up is almost instantaneous. Not to mention that I can wake up my PC by tapping the keyboard, instead of reaching down to press a small power button.
But what about power, you ask? Am I running up my power bill? As long as your system BIOS supports the S3 ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) mode, no. The S1 mode leaves the CPU and RAM powered up, the S3 mode powers those down. Our article from a couple years ago on how to check and change your BIOS sleep state is still relevant. My high-end system uses some 120-130 watts just sitting at the desktop (not including monitor), and uses 1 watt when powered off (most computers draw a very small amount of power, even when off, so they can do things like turn on when you press the power button). In sleep mode, my system draws a whopping 5 watts. Five. What does that different of 4 watts mean to you?
My computer is running a lot more than the average person's, so let's just suppose your system is turned off 16 hours a day. That 4W difference works out to a whopping 1.92 killowatt-hours (kWh) per month. According to the Department of Energy, the average price for electricity in the U.S. is 11.59 cents per kWh, so sleep mode costs you 22.2 cents per month. The average home in the U.S. uses 936 kWh per month, so 16 hours of sleep mode a day would be a 0.21% increase in monthly power usage. That's what we call a "rounding error."
Of course, some systems use a little more power in sleep mode, but it's almost always under 10W. We have more on how to change the function of your computer's power button here. You probably don't want hibernate mode, which dumps the contents of your PC's RAM to the hard disk and then power off your PC, so you can resume right where you left off (with programs open and so on). With the large amount of RAM in today's systems, this can be a pretty slow option.
You should also make sure your BIOS and Windows are both up to date. Sleep mode has been finicky in the past, but motherboard manufacturers and Microsoft have worked out most of the kinks by now. If you don't update your BIOS and OS, it might not work right.

Bihar’s budding scientist Meraj Ahmad working on rail engine

By Mudassir Rizwan, TwoCircles.net,
Meraj Ahmed, 24, living in Betiah, a backward district in Bihar, has won several awards for his innovations – the recent one from President of India. Nowadays he is working on a rail engine like that of bullet train. But his bullet train engine will run on the normal railway track. Talking to Mudassir Rizwan of TwoCircles.net Meraj gives detail about his innovations, his life and problems, and his future plans.
Mr Meraj, please tell us about you and your background.
I am Meraj Ahmad. I am from a lower class family in Betiah district in West Champaran. We are 3 brothers and a youngest sister. My father is in Revenue department where he works as a clerk. Economic problems have always been with my family. I have done I.Sc. (Mathematics) by doing tuition. I started doing innovation from class VII. I have done so many innovations, some very new. I want to do something big in future. I want to be a big scientist and serve the society and the country.

What is your first innovation?
Firstly I have created a “Picture tube charger”. When TV becomes old then its picture is not shown clearly. With my charger the picture tube can be charged again. After that we will get new quality picture tube that can run up to 4 years. It costs only Rs 150. You can charge your home battery of 12 volts also with this charger.
I heard that you got award for this innovation.
Yes, President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil gave me a prestigious national award for the grassroot innovation.
Tell me about your other innovations that you have done.
I have done 20 inventions. They include “Rat trapping machine” and “Magnetic weighing balance”. This magnetic weighing balance ensures exact weight and there is no need of mass or weight and it’s not costly either. Secondly, I made a new type of “Cycle”. Without pedalling it will run up to 10 minutes. It has some other features also. If there is crowd on your way, you can pull brake and after crossing the crowd when you leave clutch the cycle will start running automatically.

Have you got any support from govt.?
No, I did not get any support from the government. Some media persons came here and told me that they will try to provide me some help, they also told me to do marketing of what I innovate, but I don’t want how to do marketing and I don’t want to stop at the President award. I want to become a scientist. If anybody wants to help me then I want to continue my education. I want to do B.Tech. from a good institution.
On which projects are you working nowadays?
Nowadays I am working on 2-3 things. One is train. I am working on a fast train engine that will take only half the time of a fast train that takes 16-17 hours to cover 2000 kmss. Among fast trains there is train called bullet train. For bullet train, there is a special track, special engine and special configuration. But I am making a structure of an engine that will run on the same track but will cover 16-17 hours journey in only 8-9 hours.
Are you getting any support for your train project?
Till now I am not getting any support but one of my relatives who is a railway staff is giving me some monetary support. He encourages me to work on the project.
In future what do you want to do?
I want to do B.Tech. from a good university and also want to work on new innovations. If I am given chance I want to put before people what is in my mind.

Meraj's first innovation
Your message to Muslim youngsters and youth?
At this program of Rahmani 30, their successful candidates of IIT-JEE said that they had support of their teachers and parents but I want to say that I have got President Award without any support. I did not take any tuition as I could not afford. What I am today is the result of my own hard work. I want to tell the youngsters that if they are getting any economic or physical or any problem they should fact it. They will get success one day and everyone will know them.

The best way to lose weight, according to Prophet Muhammad's advice

"Nobody in society is discriminated against more than overweight people. If you are fat, people are looking at you and feeling a sense of empowerment and privilege from comparing themselves to you. If that makes you feel really bad, it should. [Especially if you are female]

Overweight women are at an extreme disadvantage in society. You will almost never be accepted/respected to a fair degree unless you lose weight if you are female. If you are male, you also should lose weight. I like to ‘keep it real’, or whatever, so I'’m not going to pretend that this isn’t a bigger deal for women than men: it is."*

Vegetables, fruit, water, jogging, gym, rice, low fat products, Atkins diet, zone diet, Dr. Phil'’s nonsense, etc. etc. etc. Forget all this.

If you want to lose weight, eat less. It is this simple.

"Let people fill one third of their stomach with food, one third with drink and one third with nothing."**-Prophet Muhammad SAW.

People today eat until they are full. And they try to conrol their weight by eating differently. They don't realize that whether they eat fruits or burgers, if they take more calories than they need, they will gain weight.

The basic, practical way to lose weight is to eat less. If you usually eat three pieces of a pizza during a meal, eat two to lose weight.

If you are overweight, please stop making excuses for yourself. Face the truth. This is a character problem, it is not genetic. It is your own personal weakness. It is time that you did something about it. If you are Muslim, your life is supposed to be dedicated to Allah, not your stomach.

Palestine hopes to resume direct peace talks with Israel, says Abbas

    By NNN-Bernama,
Putrajaya : Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas said he hoped direct peace talks can be resumed with Israel if both sides manage to finalise two issues -- borders and security arrangements, in their ongoing proximity peace talks.
Answering a question on the progress made so far in the proximity peace talks (indirect peace talks), the Palestinian leader said that since talks began early this month, both sides had completed two rounds of discussions with the focus being on border and security issues.
"I hope within four months...more or less we can finalise this two...if we do of course we can go to direct talks (with Israel)," he said at a joint press conference after talks with Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak at the latter's office here Thursday, where among others Abbas briefed Najib on the latest progress concerning the proximity peace talks.
Abbas arrived here Thursday for a three-day working visit to further enhance the existing excellent relations between Malaysia and Palestine. This is his second visit, the first was in 2007.
The indirect Israel-Palestine peace talks which the United States is mediating started on May 9 and has a four-month deadline.
The indirect peace talks, approved by the Arab League, also cleared the way for the first negotiations in 18 months between Israel and Palestine and gave a boost to Washington's peace diplomacy in the region.
Abbas said he would also discuss the border and security issue, when he visits the United States to meet US President Barack Obama, expected to be sometime next month.
"We will (also) talk about all other issues, which we call core issues like...Jerusalem and so on and we will see what will happen... anyhow we are making progress," he said.
The Palestinian leader stressed that Palestine was commited to peace and the two-state solution through negotiations where both Israel and a sovereign Palestine state lived side by side peacefully.
About his discussions with Najib, Abbas said he had a very successful talk where he also reiterated Palestine and its people's appreciation to the people and the Malaysian government for their continous support towards their just cause.
Abbas said the Palestinian people hoped that these talks would lead to the establishment of an independent Palestine state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Abbas also urged his rival faction Hamas, which controls Gaza, to sign an Egyptian-brokered document aimed at paving the way for legislative and presidential elections, which Fatah had already signed, for the sake of the Palestinian people.
He said that he had also told the Prime Minister about the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza due to Israel's blockade and the necessity for the immediate ending of the siege.
Describing the bilateral relations as always having been brotherly and excellent, Abbas said he saw his meeting with Najib as an opportunity to express his deep gratitude and thanks to the people of Malaysia and its leadership for their support to the Palestinian struggle.
"We are confident that Malaysia will continue to support the Palestinian struggle for ending the occupation of our land, especially in Jerusalem ...and hoping that all of us will be able to pray in Al-Aqsa Mosque (Islam's third holiest shrine after Mecca and Medina)... in the near future," he said.

Chidambaram acted in haste in congratulating Maha ATS?

    By TwoCircles.net Staff Correspondent,
Mumbai: With Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) securing remand of Abdul Samad Bhatkal in an arms case, not in the Pune blast case as the interrogators could not get much in 24 hours of questioning, it seems Home Minister P Chidambaram has acted in a haste in congratulating the ATS for arresting ‘Pune prime suspect.’
The remand application of Maharashtra ATS before Mazgaon Metropolitan Magistrate here on May 25 sought remand of Samad in connection with the arms seizure of August 2009 in which three persons were arrested from south Mumbai for possession of illegal firearms. Samad has been remanded in police custody till June 1.

The Maharashtra ATS, with the support of Karnataka police, arrested 22-year-old Samad from Mangalore’s Bajpe airport soon after he arrived on an Air India Express flight from Dubai at 8:30 am on May 24.
Soon after he was picked, Maharashtra ATS declared it arrested the prime suspect of Pune blast of February 2010 that claimed 17 lives. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram spent no time and issued a statement in New Delhi complimenting the Maharashtra ATS for identifying Samad as prime accused in the Pune blasts. His arrest was considered a major breakthrough and lauding the police action Chidambaram said: “I compliment ATS Maharashtra, the Pune Police and central agencies on apprehending the prime suspect within hundred days of the incident.”
Samad was interrogated by the Maha ATS team for next 24 hours after he was nabbed but he did not spill the beans, and ultimately next day, his police remand was sought in an arms case, not the Pune blasts case.

According to Headlines Today TV news channel, the ATS has been unable to build a watertight case against Samad in Pune case. “He had allegedly sent two e-mails from his Yahoo id that were to be used to nail him, but the interrogators could not get any copy. It was the only way the ATS could have proved that Samad was present in Pune on the day of the blast.”
Moreover, the channel said, the mobile phones suspected to have been used by Samad have also failed to prove his involvement. “The nervousness of the ATS was clearly evident in the manner Samad was produced before a magistrate on charges unrelated to Pune bombing. The ATS instead said it wanted to question him in connection with the recovery of small arms from Mumbai's Byculla area last year.”
Meanwhile, Samad’s family has cried foul over his arrest. They insist Samad is innocent. “He has nothing to do with either the Pune blast or the Mumbai arms case he has been charged in,” his mother, Bibi Rehana, in Mumbai with Samad’s uncle Mohammad Ali Siddibapa and aunt C Halima, has been quoted as saying. Bibi Rehana says his son is being framed by the police. “My son has been wrongly framed. We are helpless as we can't do anything,” she said.
Samad’s family has claimed he was in the village on the day of Pune bombing attending a marriage. Samad's uncle Mohammad Ibrahim has been quoted as saying: “He was attending my son's marriage at the time of blast at German Bakery.”

The family lives in Magdoom Colony in Bhatkal district of Karnataka. The villagers have rallied behind his family in support. They say Samad was studying computers in Bangalore and has never been involved in any such activity.
Meanwhile, Mumbai lawyer Mobin Solkar has decided to represent Samad. The family has reportedly also contacted Jamiat Ulema Maharashtra seeking their help. The state unit of Jamiat has been providing legal services to scores of community youths picked up in terror cases.
It is interesting to note here that in 2008, Samad was picked up by the Mangalore police for his alleged role in July 2008 blasts in Bangalore. However, he was let off due to lack of evidence after which he went to Dubai.
It is early to conclude the fate of the case. However, it seems the Home Minister Chidambaram has shown extra hurriedness in patting Police for nabbing ‘Pune prime suspect Samad’ when he is seeing how the police stories and investigations in terror cases are falling flat one after another. Chidambaram is under intense pressure nowadays for failure of his police in taking on Naxals, thus he must be feeling relieved after getting ‘a big success’ in another case. His predecessor Shiv Raj Patil was in the same situation after Delhi serial blasts of September 2008 and then the Batla House encounter was done.

The Death of Prophet's Son in his Infancy

When the Prophet's infant son Ibraheem was ill, our Sayyida Mariyah, Radi Allahu 'Anha, called for Allah's Messenger to come quickly.
When Allah's Messenger, Sal Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, arrived, baby Ibraheem was in his final breaths of life.
... now think for a moment, May Allah protect you and your family.
Imagine your son's infant body in your arms cradle.
His eyes bulging, gasping for breath, face turning blue. Dying.
    In your hands.
And there is nothing you can do...
except surrender to Allah's Will, with full submission.
This is what Allah's Messenger, Sal Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, experienced.
Tears spilled down Allah's Messenger's cheeks. The Sahabah, our Sayyids, flanked the Prophet, Sal Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, and they asked him about the tears. With the tears streaming down his cheeks, he said, Sal Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, "
    The Eyes Tear
    The Heart is in Pain
But (with my tongue) I will only say that which is pleasing to Allah
And we are indeed sad at your departure, O Ibraheem
Lesson: When someone experiences a death in the family, you have access to 4 body parts:
    1) Eyes; 2) Heart; 3) Tongue; 4) Hands
It is permissible to cry with the eyes.
So next time you see someone crying at the death of a loved one, you don't have to insist that they stop crying.
It is permissible to feel sadness in the heart.
So next time you see someone sad at the death of a loved one, you don't have to 'reprimand' them.
But it is with the TONGUE and/or Hands that one either wins the mercy of Allah, or slips in to displeasing Allah. (With hands one must not slap their face, pull at their clothes or hair)
If you've been through a calamity, you cannot bring back what was lost.
But there is an infinite reward of PATIENCE that is awaiting your tongue's response.
My advice to you, dear brother and sister, is that there is nothing to gain by missing out on being patient during this difficult time. Be Patient, and Say the Most Pleasing Thing to Allah,"
Inna lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raaji'oon -"We are all Allah's property, and we will all surely return to Him."

IIT-JEE results out: Rahmani-30 results low, ranks high

    By Mumtaz Alam Falahi, TwoCircles.net,
Patna: Trying hard to repeat last year’s success, Rahmani-30 coaching centre for Muslim IIT aspirants has secured 33% results this year in IIT-JEE. However, the ranks of its successful students this year are higher than those of last year. According to the results of IIT-JEE 2010, announced at 8 am today, of 12 students of Rahmani-30 who had appeared in the April 11 test, only four have qualified for admission in IIT.
Congratulations to Maulana Muhammad Wali Rahmani and ADGP Abhayanand, the heart and brain behind Rahmani-30 experiment, on this success.

“The result of IIT-JEE-2010 is out now and by the grace of Almighty Allah, students of Rahmani 30 have once again proven with their success that strong will and sincere labour can let one achieve any goal easily. Supported by commendable and efficient efforts of Shri Abhyanand Ji, ADGP (Academic Head of Rahmani 30) and able faculty members and under graceful supervision and care of prominent Islamic scholar Hazrat Maulana Mohammad Wali Rahmani (Chairman, Rahmani Foundation, Khanqah Munger), the students of the institution have made themselves among selected ones of one of the most prestigious and toughest competitive examinations of the country,” Rahmani-30 release said.
The first batch of Rahmani-30, managed by the Rahmani Foundation of Munger, had got 100% success. Rahmani-30 was launched in July 2008 and the first batch appeared in IIT-JEE in April 2009. There were 10 students in the first batch. But the result of the second batch comprising 12 students, is not satisfactory, at least according to the popular expectation. However, Maulana Wali Rahmani, the patron of Rahmani-30 and Abyanand, ADGP, and the Academic Head of Rahmani-30, are satisfied with the results of their hard work.

“As usual we are very happy with the efforts we have made and with whatever results we have got,” Abhyanand told TwoCircles.net.
On why only one-third of the students of Rahmani-30 got success this year, the senior police officer of Bihar said: “Last year, the results were including the extended merit list. But this year none of our students is in the extended list. That’s why the results this year are more realistic.”
Talking to media, Maulana Wali Rahmani expressed happiness over the results and congratulated Abhayanand and the faculty for the success.

Result being shown to Maulana Wali Rahmani, Abhayand on the extreme left
Rahmani-30 can feel satisfied with the fact that the ranks of the successful students this year are much higher compared to the last year.
Of 10 successful students of Rahmani-30 in 2009, six were in the extended list. Among the rest four, two had ranks above 6000 and two others between 1900-2000.
