No Wedding, No Meat, No Bed?

“There was a group of the Companions of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), one of whom said: ‘I will not marry.’ Another said: ‘I will not eat meat.’ Another said: ‘I will not sleep on a bed.’ Another said: ‘I will fast and not break my fast.’ News of that reached the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) and he praised Allah then said: ‘What is the matter with people who say such and such? But I pray and I sleep, I fast and I break my fast, and I marry women. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me.’” [Sunan an-Nasai]

The concluding words of this hadith are an admonition. Turning away from the Sunnah of Allah’s beloved Messenger puts one’s Islam in doubt. It is not possible to exceed him (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) in piety. Whatever one tries to do against the teachings of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) is a distortion of the religion.

In this hadith we are warned against adopting the extremism of the people of earlier religions, who forbade for themselves those things which Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) had made lawful for them. Then they were not able to live up to these self imposed hardships.

Islam is the religion of the Fitrah; it corresponds to human nature. Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) has only forbidden us those things which harm our Dunya or Akhirah. It is extremely unwise to start adding or subtracting from this list. Doing so implies knowing better than Allah; while no-one knows better than Him and no-one loves us more than Him.

The Woman with Wooden Sandals

The Woman with Wooden Sandals

“The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) delivered a lengthy sermon one day covering the affairs of the world and the Hereafter. He also said: ‘Surely, the first thing that destroyed the Bani Israil were the poor and needy women who went to great lengths for their clothes and colours. They wore colourful clothes which only the wealthy women could afford.’ He then mentioned one woman of the Bani Israil who was short-statured. She got for herself wooden sandals to conceal her height and got made for herself a ring with an opening which was locked from the top. She filled it with musk. She then walked with tall or fat women. The people sent a man behind them and he recognized the tall women but not the one with wooden sandals.” [Sahih Muslim]

The Tourism of My Nation

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The tourism of my nation is Jihad in the Cause of Allah.” [Abu Dawud]

Real tourism, for relaxation and enjoyment with one’s family, is in Jannah. This life is a test that qualifies people for Jannah or Jahannum. Jihad serves the purpose of removing the barriers to the spread of Islam, so that people are free to choose Islam without fear of persecution, and are free to live under the justice and mercy of the Shariah. The Sahabah and generations of Muslims undertook difficult journeys to far away lands, with no guarantee of returning, for this purpose alone.

An Extraordinary Dream (VII)

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “They said to me, ‘Go on! Go on!’ and we went on until we reached a huge tree and I have never seen any tree bigger or more beautiful than it. They said to me, ‘Climb it.’ We climbed it and came to a city built of gold and silver bricks. We came to the door of the city and asked for it to be opened and it was opened for us and we entered it. We were met by men half of whose physique was the most beautiful you have ever seen and the other half was the ugliest you have ever seen. The two said to them, ‘Go and plunge into that river.’ There was a wide river flowing there whose water was pure white. They went and jumped into it and when they returned to us, that evil had left them and they had the most beautiful form.”

“They said to me, ‘This is the Garden of Eden, and that is your place.’ I raised my eyes upwards and there was a castle like a white cloud. They said to me, ‘This is your place.’ I said to them, ‘May Allah bless you, let me enter it.’ They said, ‘No, not now. But you will enter it.’” [Sahih Bukhari]

Purpose of Marriage

When a man married, the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) would say, “Allah bless you, and unite you both in good works.” [Abu Dawud]

The purpose of all our actions in life should be the pleasure of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). This is true for marriage as well. Together husband and wife make a fantastic team but for this their mutual relationship has to be strong.

Regarding the husband-wife relationship Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) says: “They are as a garment for you and you are as a garment for them.” [Quran 2:187] The following two ayaat of the Quran explain what the function of a garment is:

Be Useful: Live Longer

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "Nothing keeps away the decree (of Allah) except prayer, and nothing increases the life (of man) except goodness; and man is only denied the provisions (of life) because of sins upon which he falls." [Ibn Majah] "Almsgiving extinguishes the wrath of Allah." [Tirmidhi]

This hadith tells us many important things:

1. If we want to prevent misfortunes, accidents, and bad things in general from happening to us, we should make dua. Dua alone has the power to stall some misfortune that was decreed to befall us.
2. If we want to live longer, then we should practice what Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) defines as goodness.
3. If we want our rizq/provisions to increase, we should not commit sins.
4. If we don't want to be punished by Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) for our sins, we should give sadaqa/charity.

Research suggests that those who spend 4-6 hours in various voluntary activities weekly live 6-8 years longer than those who don't. This is one of the benefits of helping others that modern research has revealed. There are hundreds of other benefits. Make yourself useful so that Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) may let you live a few more years to serve His creation. [30 Second Successories by Faiez H. Seyal]

Reward through Husband's Earnings

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "When a woman spends (in the Path of Allah) from her husband's wealth, not wasting it (but spends reasonably and within permissible limits) she will have her reward for what she gave and her husband will have his for what he earned. The same applies to the storekeeper. The reward of any of these persons does not diminish the rewards of the others." [Sahih Bukhari]

In the life of this world, the title or ownership of wealth is outwardly assigned to human beings, through apparent means such as earnings or inheritance, due to the necessity of organising the affairs of an orderly society. However, all human beings are on an equal footing in terms of real ownership of possessions, in view of the fact that it is not man but Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) Who is the Absolute Owner. The husband, the wife, and even an employee who arranges for the charity payment to be made, are all rewarded due to their respective roles in facilitating the giving of charity and not on account of their temporary ownership of what was donated.

This hadith of Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) should be a source of reassurance to ladies that their giving in charity will earn them reward, regardless of whether they personally earned the money or not.

An Aristocrat’s Advice

When the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam)was asked which woman was best he replied, "The one who pleases (her husband) when he looks at her, obeys him when he gives a command, and does not go against his wishes regarding her person or property by doing anything of which he disapproves." [Nasai in Shu'ab al-Iman]

“Awf ibn Muhallim al-Shaybani one of the most highly respected leaders of the Arab nobility during Jahiliyyah married his daughter Umm Iyas to al-Harith ibn Amr al-Kindi. As she was being prepared to be taken to the groom her mother, Umamah, came to advise her and said:

Al-Mumin

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) taught us to ask: “Allahummas tur-auraati wa aamin row-aati.” [Abu Dawud]

This is a Dua in which we ask Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) to conceal all our defects and exchange our state of fear and worry with peace and security.

A pious man living in Baghdad was strolling by the Tigris when he noticed a scorpion scurrying along the bank in front on him. He thought to himself that this is also a creation of Allah’s and nothing Allah has created is without purpose. Wondering where it had come from, where it was going and for what purpose, he decided to follow it and find out.

The scorpion walked a while then turned towards the river and waited at its edge. Presently a turtle came swimming towards the scorpion. The scorpion jumped onto its back and the turtle started swimming back across the river with the scorpion riding on it. Since the pious man had decided to follow the scorpion he rented a boat and began to follow the turtle.

Book of Fate

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Bear in mind that if all the people combined together to grant you some benefit, they would not be able to do it unless Allah has determined it for you. And that if all of them combined together to do you harm, they would not be able to do it unless Allah has determined it for you. The pens have been set aside and writings of the Book of Fate have become dry.” [Tirmidhi]

The important lesson to understand from this hadith is that we must not fear death, loss or reproach in obeying the commands of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala), for only that harm will come to us which is already destined to. A believer should not be frightened by the number or resources of the enemies of Allah. This should never determine whether they should obey Allah or not, as this hadith tells us that they can not do any harm unless Allah has destined it for them. And if that is the case that harm will come anyway, but the believer will be rewarded for obeying the commands of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).

Unfortunately, we find Muslims helping to hurt and kill other Muslims today, using as an excuse that harm would come to them otherwise. We need to develop our understanding of qada wal qadar to become righteous.

Earth’s Information

                                                         Earth’s Information

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) recited this Aayah: “That Day it (the earth) will declare its information (about all that happened over it of good or evil).” [Surah Az-Zalzalah, Ayat 4] He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) then asked his Companions: “Do you know what ‘its information’ is?” They said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “Its information means that it will testify against every man and woman about what they did on its surface. It will say, ‘On such and such a day they did such and such. That is ‘its information.’” [Tirmidhi]

Among the witnesses against a person will be the earth, and days and nights; they will testify about what was done to them and against them. Wealth will testify against its owner; a person’s own body will testify against him; and the angels who record deeds, both good and evil will also be witnesses. Imaam Qurtubi devoted a chapter to this subject in his Tadhkirah.

Are You Lucky

                                                           Are You Lucky

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “How lucky is that man who adopts humbleness without having scarcity, who considers himself inferior without having to beg for anything, who spends his own earned money in the right causes without disobeying Allah, who is kind to those having little means, and
who remains in the company of learned men.” [Tibrani]

In this hadith we are told who an enviable person is:

1.    A person who is humble despite having that which makes people proud.
2.    A person who earns and spends in the path of Allah.
3.    A person who is kind to those less privileged.
4.    A person who benefits from the companionship of the learned.

Having wealth does not make one lucky; but having earned it honestly, by one's own hands and, moreover, having spent it on those things which earn Allah's pleasure, while obedient to Allah (subhana wa ta'ala), are what entitles one to be counted among the lucky. Wealth that is accompanied by arrogance and ignorance (ignorance of what will earn Allah's pleasure), is extremely unlucky.

Can you count yourself lucky?

Loving and Kissing In Islam.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 11, Number 677:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet said, "When I start the prayer I intend to prolong it, but on hearing the cries of a child, I cut short the prayer because I know that the cries of the child will incite its mother's passions."
So the prophet Muhammed (PBUH) would shorten a prayer for the feelings of a mother, the feelings of a mother to a child. As we all know, many mothers often tend to their children when they hear them crying, so the prophet Muhammed (PBUH) would purposely shorten the prayer on hearing the cries of a child, so the mother could tend to her child, and so the mother would need not worry! What a lovely example of compassion and mercy, if only most humans could care to think of such compassion, then this world would be a much better place.
Other examples of the prophet Muhammed’s (PBUH) compassion come from the following hadiths:
Sahih Bukhari Volume 8, Book 73, Number 26:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle kissed Al-Hasan bin Ali while Al-Aqra' bin Habis At-Tamim was sitting beside him. Al-Aqra said, "I have ten children and I have never kissed anyone of them," Allah's Apostle cast a look at him and said, "Whoever is not merciful to others will not be treated mercifully."
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 73, Number 27:
Narrated 'Aisha:

CHINA MUSLIM SILATURRAHIM (bonding or close ties)

Silaturrahim is an Arabic word meaning bonding or close ties. Silaturrahim Tour is therefore not just an ordinary tour where one takes in the sights and scenes of the country, but it also helps  to promote  cultural and educational interaction. In this way a closer bond is established.
Pioneer of Silaturrahim Tour
Brother Jaafar Mah, a Chinese Muslim living in Singapore whose ancestors were Muslims from China conceived the idea of Silaturrahim Tour in 1994. As there are many  Malay Muslims in Singapore who are still unaware of the fact that Islam existed in China as early as the 8th century, a trip to China would be an eye-opener. In fact there exist in China many historical and cultural sites and relics of Islamic interest as well as madrasahs and mosques which were built hundreds of years ago. The oldest mosque is the one in Kwantung, known as the Luminous Tower Mosque -- the first mosque in the world to be built outside Medina.
As Brother Jaafar has always maintained close contact with the Muslim community in China, he has made arrangements with the relevant Muslim authorities and tour agents there to facilitate the Silaturrahim Tour and to ensure that those who go on the tour will get genuine Halal food.
In 1995, the first Silaturrahim Tour was launched for members of the Muslim Converts Association of Singapore (Darul Arqam) and Brother Jaafar led this pioneer group. Since then such tours have been organised regularly throughout the year for the convenience of Muslims who wish to visit China.
As the tours gradually became popular among the Muslims in Singapore, commercial tour agencies began to ride on the idea as they realise that there is a potential market for China Muslim tours. But our Silaturrahim Tour is non-profit based as they are organised as a community service project. Proceeds from the tours are channeled to sponsor poor and  needy children to have an opportunity to pursue an education , to set up  child-care centers cum kindergartens and to help build sanitary facilities in poor rural areas. We hope that Muslims from all over the world will help in our charity effort by participating in our Silaturrahim Tour.
History - Early Muslim Ties with China
Islam was introduced to China as early as the 7thcentury (during the Tang Dynasty) when merchants from Arabia and Persia came to China to trade via the Silk Road. In AD.651, the third Caliph Uthman Ibn Affan, sent an envoy to call on the reigning Tang Emperor Gao Zong, and since then Islam began to be found in many parts of China.
In the midst of trade and cultural exchanges across the Asia-Europe continent for the next few centuries, streams of Muslim immigrants from central Asia settled permanently in China. They had contacts with local Chinese Muslim converts. They carried on their faith, built mosques and cemeteries and gradually created a unique social unit of their own.
However all these exchanges gradually diminished during the Ming and Qing(Manchu) Dynasties and they came to a stop with the establishment of the Communist government. It was only in the 1980’s under the leadership of Deng Xiaopeng that China slowly open up to tourists from all over the world.
Muslims in the present day era
Today China has ten Muslim nationalities, numbering more than 30 million Muslims. They are the Hui, Uighur, Kazakh, Dongxiang, Khalkhas, Salar, Tajik, Uzbek, Baoan and Tartar. These nationalities have their own written and spoken languages and cultures and their unique ethnic traditions.
When the Republic of China was formed in 1911 the Muslims were recognised as a Race in China. Now the Communist Government calls all Muslims as the HUI race. The national constitution testified to the freedom of faith.
Beijing has about 200,000 Muslims, Xian -- 60,000, Shanghai – 100,000 and Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia, a modest 30,000.

Hajj for Human Dignity and Unity

Abu Uthman al-Sabani al-Shafii (d 449) in his book Kitab ul Maitain narrates Prophet Muhammad as saying, "towards the end of the time, four main groups of people will flock around the Kaaba to perform Hajj: The powerful rulers to have fun or to enjoy the occasion, the rich people to promote their businesses, the poor to seek financial support and the reciters (or scholars) to demonstrate their skills."
Al-Sabuni was not an ordinary scholar. He narrated the Hadith after ensuring that the matan or text and isnad or chains are sound. He once said "I never narrated a Hadith nor a non-Prophetic report in a gathering except if I possessed its chain of transmission; nor did I ever enter the library except in a state of ritual purity; nor did I ever narrate Hadith, nor hold a gathering, nor teach, except in a state of ritual purity."
Are we living in that period that was predicted by the Prophet? Has Hajj really become a type of ritual devoid of any meaning? Is Hajj an individual ibada (worship) that requires a believer to spend time and resources to get closer to an omni-potent and omni-present God? Has the Hajj become a business in our times? Or has it become a vacation?

There was a time when people would spend months and months preparing themselves financially and spiritually to live the real meaning of Hajj. However now a days Hajj is offered as a holiday package. Many Hajj agencies all over the world offer value packages with super programs, deluxe programs and short executive program. These programs offer the best and closest accommodation in Makkah and Medinah, best available food and best possible position in the House of Allah. Depending how much you pay, you can get the finest place in Makkah and Medinah. If you happen to be the guest of royalty, then probably, no one can ever compete with your placement in the two mosques. When the Prophet performed his only Hajj, the only provision that he had with him was no more than four dirham as narrated in several books of ahadith.
