Why are Muslims not succeeding?

By Fatima Tanveer,
Mr. Kaleem Khwaja's article "Why Indians are succeeding in US but not Indian Muslims?" needs to be read between the lines. Though it is a criticism of the way of living of Indian Muslims based in US, it reflects the pain and anguish of Mr. Khwaja seeing his co-religionists from India not succeeding in the same degree as non-Muslims from the sub-continent.
For any community to grow, it requires a favorable political atmosphere for the members of the community in the country because the political system and state administration plays a vital role in any kind of development. And it becomes very difficult if the administration and political system do not cooperate with the members of the community.
Muslims in the USA
The news available through print, television and internet media indicate there is deep Islamophobia generated throughout the length and breadth of US after 9/11 when twin World Trade Towers were attacked by suspected Muslims. There is a strong bias among the US Christians against Islam and Muslims and entire atmosphere has turned extremely hostile for Muslims. In such a situation, it will become extremely difficult for any Muslim to make any remarkable achievement particularly in electoral politics in which support is given on the basis of religious, caste and regional identities. It is not true of India only but the entire world.
So, non-Muslim Indians Bobby Jindal or for that matter Nikki Haley won the elections to become governors of their respective states because they happened to be Christians. Even US president Barack Hussein Obama had to several times prove his Christian identity when he came under severe attack from his Republican opponents for his father's Muslim background.
So, one can understand the degree of hatred against Muslims in US society and considering such a political situation prevailing in US, one can guess how much difficult it is for Muslims to work and operate in that country not only in political field but other areas as well.
Muslims in ‘liberal’ Europe
And in fact, the same anti-Muslim sentiment prevails in the rest of the world including. Europe. All of us know that Bosnian Muslims had almost assimilated themselves with the rest of the Yugoslavians. No one could recognize from their dresses and outer appearance if he/she is a Muslim. When Yugoslavia split and different regional identities demanded independence for their respective regions, it was quite natural for Bosnians (most of them Muslims) to demand an independent state for themselves.
But the world powers like Britain said that an independent Muslim state can not be allowed inside Europe, indicating a clear bias against Muslims and Islam at a time when no incidents like 9/11 involving Muslims had taken place. And all of us know what happened to Bosnian Muslims and how they were treated. Such a savagery had never been witnessed in the recent human history. And Bosnian Muslims had to pay the price for simply identifying themselves as Muslims.
Interesting example of Turkey
Turkey, with half of its geographical area in Europe and the remaining half in Asia, is another example of facing discrimination because of its majority population being Muslims though it is among the most secular of Muslim nations in the world.
The grand Blue Mosque in Istanbul was converted into a national museum by Turkey's Muslim army under Kamal Ataturk on the ground that it was once a Church and hence, it can't continue as a mosque. And it is still a museum.
Wearing of Muslim head scarf for women and a Turkish cap for men was banned in that country to prove Turkey's secular credentials and in a bid to Westernize(or culturally Christianize) it.
Yet, Turkey has yet not been incorporated as a member of the European Union (or better call it a Christian Union because all EU members are Christian majority states) for the simple reason of Turkey carrying a Muslim identity.
People of Turkish origin numbering around four millions in Germany are taunted as people with low intelligent quotient simply because they happen to be Muslims. And recent wave of ban on full veils or wearing of head scarves by Muslim women in France and other European countries, publication of derogatory cartoons of Prophet Muhammed (Peace be Upon Him) indicates the deep-rooted hatred against Muslims in European Christian society, hinting how difficult it will be for Muslims to make political, social, educational, cultural and economic advancement.
Muslims in ‘USSR’
Let's now come to another side of the world including Russia. A number of Muslim majority areas like Kazakastan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan etc were part of USSR for several decades. Yet, these areas did not witness the kind of industrial and economic development like other parts of USSR with Christian or non-Muslim majority.
Though USSR was a communist ruled country with not favoring any particular religion, yet Muslim areas faced discrimination. And when they became independent after break up of USSR, we know what was the condition of these Muslim majority states known as Commonwealth of Independent States(CIS) despite the fact most of these states are rich in petroleum and natural resources.
Disaster in the Arab world
Coming to the Muslim Arab world, Iraq occupied by US-led Christian forces was militarily the most powerful in the Gulf region and it was the only country with some degree of military might to challenge Israel.
President Saddam Hussein had his training in a communist set up and was also not a religious fundamentalist. Yet, the Christian world decimated Iraq to ensure that there is no threat to Israel, an extension of Christian US in the Gulf region.
Now, the Christian powers are planning to target Iran, the only other Muslim country in the Gulf region with a powerful military. However, with US and European economy taking a slide down and global strategic situations going against US- led Christian world, Iran has got a temporary respite.
But the economic and trade sanctions, imposed by manipulating the United Nations has been aimed to spoil Iran’s economy and ensure it dies a slow death.
But the same US and European powers are turning a blind eye to Jewish Israel. US-led NATO forces have already pulverized Afghanistan because its brave people wanted to have Islamic constitution after pushing Soviet Russia out.
Muslims in India
Now let me come to the Muslim situation in my own country. In the last 60 years of independence, Muslim Indians have been reduced to the status of the most backward communities as proved by the Sachar committee report.
On the other hand Dalits who were at the bottom in every sphere of life have made much progress by governmental intervention through reservations in jobs, educational institutions, assemblies and parliament.
Muslim representation in parliament and state assemblies has been going down continuously. Despite Muslims accounting for 13.4 % (2001 Census) of India's population, their representation in the centers of political power is miniscule.
Prejudice against Muslims is so rampant that they can’t buy houses and properties in non-Muslim localities in major metros like Delhi, Mumbai and even Ahmedabad.
Every body knows how film actor and parliamentarian Shabana Azmi couldn’t buy a flat in an elite locality in Mumbai some time ago. The state sponsored killing of Muslims and destruction of their properties in the anti-Muslim pogrom in Gujarat in 2002 with the accused roaming freely is before every body to see.
Since Independence, Muslim Indians are facing terror in shape of communal riots in which state agencies have been found to be by and large biased against Muslims.
How can then Muslims be expected to grow at the same pace and make achievement of the same degree like non-Muslims?
It is not that Muslim leadership has not made efforts to improve the situation. They have made best of the efforts in the past and are still making an effort in that direction. Yet, the success has eluded them all.
It is a to be given a deep thought and prepare the next generation on how to steer the community towards its overall improvement and betterment of the country and the world, while at the same time preserving our religious and cultural identities as per the guidelines laid down in the Holy Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet(PUBH).
We need not lose hope. We must repose our trust in Allah, the Almighty and strive with patience and perseverance for improving the situation.
The kind of progress being made by Muslim boys and girls in the field of education in the last few years in India will, Inshallah, change the Muslim situation for the better in the next two decades.

Ten-day International Peace Conference starts in Mumbai

Over 40 speakers to discuss international, social and political issues By TCN News
Mumbai: Mumbai plays host to the fourth edition of the Islamic Peace Conference - that is being attended by renowned scholars and academia from over India and several countries, including England, USA, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and UAE, among others. The International Peace Conference will be a 10-day affair starting on Friday, October 22nd at Sion's Somaiya Grounds in Mumbai and will go on till Sunday, October 31st, 2010.
Organised by the Mumbai-based Islamic Research Foundation, the Islamic Peace Conference has had three successful editions since 2007. Over the years, the Conference has seen some of the most high profile scholars and international personalities attend and interact with the masses. Names such as Yassir Fazaga, Dr. Hussain H. Hassan (father of Islamic Banking), and Dr. Ahmad Turkistani have delivered lectures to an audience of over 25,000

The Peace Conference comes at the backdrop of the global concern among Muslims over relating all forms of terrorism to Islam and Jihad. The Peace Conference and its renowned speakers will address some of the burning issues that face the world, and attempt to explore and suggest solutions for global peace. It is expected to suggest solutions from within Islam to issues like "violence in the name of God", "Peace and Prosperity – Islam's goal for humanity", "Islam and Secularism", "Peaceful Co-existence", "Non-Muslims' Rights in Islam", "The two Extremes and the Middle Path".
The Peace Conference is a rare platform that will NOT have 'religious' leaders, but SCHOLARS and ACADEMICIANS deliberating on intellectual, yet practical, solutions to global issues affecting Islam. Hence, the Conference will not see passionate sermons being delivered by religious leaders, BUT well researched, academic and administrative solutions to communities and governments / administrations to implement.
One of the major attractions of the Conference is an exhibition of ‘Halal’ products from across the world. Halal products, among Muslims, are products made from ingredients allowed within the Islamic tenets. Worldwide, Halal products are majorly sold in Islamic economies and markets.
The Islamic Peace Conference is expected to attract lots of international focus and will see renowned speakers addressing the masses every day for 10 days. The organisers expect over 5 lakh visitors to attend the conference over the period.

Tony Blair’s sister-in-law has converted to Islam

In The name of Allah,The Most Merciful,The Most gracious

Tony Blair’s sister-in-law has converted to Islam

Tony Blair’s sister-in-law has converted to Islam after having what she describes as a “holy experience” during a visit to Iran.
Journalist and broadcaster Lauren Booth, 43 – Cherie Blair’s sister – now wears a hijab whenever she leaves her home, prays five times a day and visits her local mosque whenever she can.
She decided to become a Muslim six weeks ago after visiting the shrine of Fatima al-Masumeh in the city of Qom.
“It was a Tuesday evening and I sat down and felt this shot of spiritual morphine, just absolute bliss and joy,” she said in an interview today.
When she returned to Britain, she decided to convert immediately.
Booth – who works for Press TV, the English-language Iranian news channel – has stopped eating pork and reads the Qur’an every day. She is currently on page 60.
Booth has stopped drinking alcohol and says she has not wanted to drink since converting.
Before her spiritual awakening in Iran, she had been “sympathetic” to Islam and has spent considerable time working in Palestine, she said, adding that she hoped her conversion would help Blair change his presumptions about Islam.

When she returned to Britain, she decided to convert immediately.
‘Now I don’t eat pork and I read the Koran every day. I’m on page 60. I also haven’t had a drink in 45 days, the longest period in 25 years,’ she said.
‘The strange thing is that since I decided to convert I haven’t wanted to touch alcohol, and I was someone who craved a glass of wine or two at the end of a day.’
Refusing to discount the possibility that she might wear a burka, she said: ‘Who knows where my spiritual journey will take me?’
Before her awakening in Iran, she had been ‘sympathetic’ to Islam and has spent considerable time working in Palestine. ‘I was always impressed with the strength and comfort it gave,’ she said of the religion.
Miss Booth, who works for Press TV, the English-language Iranian news channel, has been a vocal opponent of the war in Iraq.
In August 2008 she travelled to Gaza by ship from Cyprus, along with 46 other activists, to highlight Israel’s blockade of the territory.
She was subsequently refused entry into both Israel and Egypt.
She said she hoped her conversion would help Mr Blair change his presumptions about Islam.
The men, women and children around me withstood a day of no water and no food (it’s called Ramadan, Tony, it’s a fast),’ Booth wrote.
‘Coping with hunger and thirst in the hundred degrees heat, as if it were nothing. They can withstand deprivation in the Muslim world.
‘Here in Iran they feel proud to suffer in order to express solidarity with the people of Palestine. It’s kind of like the way you express solidarity with America only without illegal chemical weapons and a million civilian deaths.’
She adds: ‘Your world view is that Muslims, are mad, bad, dangerous to know. A contagion to be contained.
‘In the final chapter [of his autobiography] you say we need a “religious counter attack” against Islam. And by “Islam” you mean the Al Quds rallies, the Palestinian intifada (based on an anti Apartheid struggle Tony, NOT religious bigotry), against every Arab who fails to put their arms in the air as the F16 missiles rain on their homes and refugee camps and sing a rousing chorus of ‘Imagine all the people…’

Helping Gaza Will Prevent Genocide

Helping Gaza Will Prevent Genocide
-- In a meeting with UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon, President Mahmud Ahmadinejad said helping Gaza will prevent genocide in the coastal strip.
Noting that the people of Gaza have been under siege for over three years, the President warned about the danger of Zionist regimes’ growing racism.
He stressed that Palestinians’ right to national sovereignty must be recognized and they should be able to determine their future in a free referendum.
Referring to the situation in Afghanistan, Dr Ahmadinejad said there is no military solution for the war-torn country. The Islamic Republic of Iran believes the only solution lies in entrusting Afghanistan’s affairs to its people, he added.
He also pointed to Iran’s nuclear issue and slammed adoption of yet another sanction resolution against Iran, despite Iran’s good will gestures and signing the Tehran declaration. The president reiterated that the sanctions would have no effects on Iran’s economy.
The unjustifiable veto power, terrorism and insecurity in the world, drug trafficking, and the flood in Pakistan were among other issues the president raised in the meeting.
UN secretary general for his part thanked Iran’s constructive role in promoting peace and security in the region, especially in Afghanistan, and said Iran can also play an important role in the Middle East peace and the world security.
Condemning terrorism in any part of the world, Ban Ki-moon said terrorism has become a great global challenge and that fighting it requires a unified strategy.
President Ahmadinejad is in New York to attend the annual United Nations General Assembly.

12,000 Islamic attacks since 9/11? Sami Zaatari

12,000 Islamic attacks since 9/11?

Sami Zaatari

As many of you may (not) know there is an anti-Islamic website which titles itself as:

The site claims to document all 'Islamic' terror attacks since 9/11, and the current number according to them is 12,078.

Now if anyone visits the site and checks their list of attacks one will notice an obvious problem, an obvious problem which Islamophobes and anti-Islamics readily ignore. This major problem is that 95%-99% of the attacks they list on a daily basis HAVE NO AUTHENTICATION!

Basically all they do is say something like this:

3 people shot to death by Islamic extremists outside a mosque in Kabul.

And when you ask for the SOURCE or any secondary source you won't be able to find none! I have emailed the site on several occasions demanding they give authentic secondary sources to back their claims up, and as usual they never respond back and remain silent.

If I made a site called the religionoflove.com, and gave a daily list of attacks being carried out by Christians with no verification, and no other secondary authentic proven sources then nobody would believe me. The Christians would all say where is the proof, your just making this all up etc. Yet when it comes to the Muslims these same Islamophobic Christians will have NO PROBLEM in accepting statements and supposed events with NO SHRED OF SECONDARY AUTHENTIC SOURCES!

So the reality is this my friends, I guarantee you that most of these supposed attacks the site lists are FAKE, and are all MADE UP. If they want to prove me wrong then it will be very easy for them, simply provide the news link and secondary AUTHENTIC sources to back each attack up, something they will never do because they know they are making most of it up!

Just visit my Christian terrorism section on this site:

You will see for each attack I bring up I provide THE SOURCE for proof of authentication! I always provide a secondary link from where I am getting my information from. Such a thing does not exist on the religionofpeace.com; all they do is provide lists of attacks with no verification and no actual news link to back their claims up!

So in conclusion the reality is this, most of the attacks that the religionofpeace.com list are fake, made up, and have never happened. Only people who are blind will accept the list because of their deep hate for Islam and the Muslims, so they won't care if the story has no authentic and secondary sources, they are so blinded they will just accept anything and take it.

I urge all my readers to spread THIS article around so people can know the reality and truth behind the shoddy Islamophobic website.

And Allah Knows Best!

UNITY OF THE MALAYS

In order to continue to rule Malaysia, the Malays must unite. While the Malays are the rulers of Malaysia the country will remain at peace and tranquility. When the power goes to the non-Malays, the Malays will not tolerate it and riots may happen. As a result there will be continuous chaos and instabilities in Malaysia. The Malays are the owner of the country and they have ruled the country for hundreds of years. Evidences have shown that the Malays have established power in the Malaysian Peninsular and the Borneo long before the foreigners came to these areas. Chinese and Indians had come to this part of this world as traders and labours during British and some of them have settled and married with the locals. The Malaysian Peninsula and Borneo are lands that belong to the Malays while the Chinese and the Indians are the immigrants and later being accepted and welcomed by the Malays to become the citizen of Malaysia. Malays, known by their generosity and gentleness are ready to accept the Chinese and the Indians to become the citizen of the newly formed country known initially as Federation of Malay States and later on known as Malaysia.
British was willing to give independence to the Federation of Malay States because the Malays are willing to give citizenship to millions of Chinese and Indians whom the British have brought to the Federated Malay States to work in the country. The British have brought the Indians to help them in the management and labour work of their rubber estates, the Ceylonese to help them in the administration works and the Chinese to help them in trading and in tin mining industry as labour work.  When the Malays are willing to give citizenship to the Chinese and the Indians, it was to the advantage of the British to give independence to the Federation of Malay States. The Chinese and the Indians, residing in Malaya at those times in reality were British citizens. In case the Malays refused to give citizenship to the Chinese and the Indians, British would have to bring these Chinese and Indians to the United Kingdom and this would had created problems to them. In return for the kindness the Malays had shown towards the Chinese and the Indians, both of these migrant communities have agreed, not to question the special rights given to the Malays by the constitutions .The Malays think they deserve to have the special rights, as they believe the country belong to them and they want the special rights to be endorsed by the Parliament and become the rules of laws in Malaysia.
Many leaders of the early generation of the Malays, Chinese and the Indians who have agreed to this social contract CLICK, by which virtue, achieved the independence of the Federation of Malay States from the British, have passed away. Many of the present Malays, Chinese and Indians have forgotten the social contract that the three races have achieved as a pre-requisite to gain the independence from the British. Many of the present Chinese and the Indians leaders and citizens who were born after the independence, question the special rights of the Malays because they are ignorant of the history leading to the independence of Malaya. We cannot blame them for questioning the rights of the Malays because they believe they are also Malaysians as they were born in Malaysia just like the Malays and they also want the same rights as the Malays. The Constitution of Malaysia stated that as long as you are a Chinese or an Indian, no matter how many generations you lived in Malaysia, you will not get the same rights as the Malays. Many Chinese and Indians, especially those who were born in Malaysia after the Independence, feel that it is not fair to give the special rights only to the Malays and not to the Chinese and the Indians. To them, it is unfair because they can never opt to become a Malay and also it is not their choice to be born as a Chinese or an Indian.
Many Chinese and Indians who are born in Malaysia, want to have the same special rights as the Malays and they are not happy with the fact that only the Malays have special rights while they don’t. Many Malaysian Chinese and Indians are unhappy with the special Malay rights and they from time to time are questioning this special rights in the media. Whenever the Chinese or the Indians question the special Malay rights in the media, the Malays will get annoyed and become irritated. When the Malays are annoyed, they will ask the Chinese and the Indians to shut up and to simply accept the social contract that their forefathers have agreed before. Many Chinese and Indians are not happy with the remarks made by the Malays and whenever they have the opportunities, they will continue to question the special Malay rights.
In my opinion, the dissatisfactions of the Chinese and the Indians, are just waiting for the right time and situation to burst into flames. The Government is trying to cover the issues with such slogans as one Malaysia, but in reality the political situation in Malaysia is very volatile. If not managed well by the present leaders, the dissatisfactions may lead to racial riot such as the racial riot of May 13th 1969. Chinese and Indians in Malaysia are dissatisfied with the special rights given to the Malays and they are just waiting for the right time to protest and to demand changes. The Chinese and the Indians in Malaysia are demanding justice and equality between races and they want to abolish any special rights given to any particular ethnic group.
In my opinion, the non-Malay opposition parties want to win the general election and they also want the Chinese or Indians to become the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Under the present law, the Yang Di Pertuan Agong is the one who finally decides who shall be the Prime Minister of Malaysia. The Yang Di Pertuan Agong definitely will want a Malay and a Muslim to be the Prime Minister. Until and unless the power given to the Yang Di Pertuan Agong is abolished, a Chinese or an Indian will never become the Prime Minister of Malaysia. In order for a Chinese and an Indian to become the Prime Minister of Malaysia they must abolish the laws that give special rights to the Malays and the power to the Malay Kings. The non-Malay opposition parties want to win the general election and in order to win they must unite and work together, such that that both the Chinese and the Indians become united and the Malays become disunited. Once the non-Malay opposition parties win the general election and the non Malays become the majority members of the Parliament with two third majority, they may then abolish the laws that give special rights to the Malays and to the Malay Kings.
The current political scenarios in Malaysia clearly show that the Malays are greatly disunited. The Malays are mainly divided into three political parties. Most Malays belong to the three major Malay political parties in Malaysia and they are against each other. Although the Malay is the biggest ethnic group in Malaysia, but when they are divided, the Malays is the minority group politically . When the Malays are minor politically, the Malays will lose the political power that they now have. The Malays will remain in power as long as they are united and remain the largest ethnic group. Once the non-Malays become united politically, the Malays will lose the power to govern Malaysia and at that time they may loss the special Malay rights they now enjoy.  At that time the Malays particularly those who are now against the unity of Malay will regret. The Malays will become like the Arabs in Palestine and the Chinese and the Indians will become like the Jews. Behind the Chinese and the Indians will be the government of America and Singapore. The American and the Singaporean governments will protect the Chinese and Indians in Malaysia as they can fulfill their demands better than the Malays. The Malays will become fugitives in their own lands and the Malay Kings will be disposed and become powerless and the Malay Kings will lose all the privileges that they used to enjoy now. The worst scenario that can happen to the Malays is that, the Malays may not even be able to practice the teachings of Islam as freely as now like in Singapore where ‘azan’ must be only in mosque and strictly not allow to ‘azan’ like in Malaysia. When that happen the individuals who belong to the groups that are against the unity of the Malays may have died but they will mostly be remembered by the future generations of the Malays as the traitors and the enemies of the Malay race.

US leaks confirm truth about Afghan war, say peace campaigners

London, July 26, IRNA – The biggest-ever leak of 90,000 US military records confirms the truth and horrors about the war in Afghanistan, Britain’s largest peace group network has said.
“The war in Afghanistan is pointless and unwinnable and the warmongers have lied to us continually. It must end now. All foreign troops must be withdrawn without delay,” Stop the War Coalition (STWC) said.
The leak that reveals many tragic stories of civilian deaths “confirms everything the anti-war movement has said for years,” an STWC spokesman said in a statement Monday obtained by IRNA.
Civic, the worldwide campaign group against civilian casualties, called for full inquiries into the individual cases of the horrors, while the US condemned as "irresponsible" the publication on Wikileaks website, saying that they could threaten national security.
“To really understand a war and its implications, the human cost should be weighed against the strategic considerations. The two go hand-in-hand. That's particularly true in Afghanistan, where commanders now realise the people are the main strategic consideration,” said Civic director Sarah Holewinski.
The huge cache of classified papers, given in advance to Britain’s Guardian newspaper, the New York Times and German daily, Der Spiegel, included numerous civilian killings that have been unreported until now.
The US army's archives also contained descriptions of at least 21 separate occasions in which British troops are said to have shot or bombed Afghan civilians, including women and children.

Muslim Brotherhood and liberals: partners for change in Egypt?

By Bilal Y. Saab,
Washington, DC - Papers around the world have speculated that Hosni Mubarak, the 82-year-old Egyptian president, is suffering from terminal stomach and pancreatic cancer and may not live to see the next presidential elections. This has once again raised the crucial question of political succession in Egypt, the Arab world's largest country and the most important Arab ally to the United States. Major shifts in Egyptian politics within the next year are needed to bring about change and usher in a new reformist era.
Egyptian liberals, a heterogeneous constellation of civil society actors, thinkers, bloggers and political activists, have a tough choice to make in the next national elections: either decline to collaborate with the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and participate on their own with no real chances of securing strong representation in the Egyptian parliament, or join forces with the Brotherhood and compromise temporarily on a philosophical level in order to potentially field a strong candidate accepted by both the liberals and the Brotherhood.
Without the Brotherhood's numbers, street appeal and potential for mobilisation, it will be difficult for Egyptian liberals to push for change. With the Brotherhood, change is possible but would most likely come at the risk of further empowering a movement whose fundamentalist, religious agenda may increasingly creep into Egyptian political life.
Facing these two choices, liberals could be tempted to collaborate with the Brotherhood, given their many weaknesses and the recent gesture by the Brotherhood to set up an online petition to back former International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief and current reform activist Mohamed ElBaradei in his popular campaign for change. The Brotherhood has collected several thousand signatures from other opposition factions, prompting analysts to wonder whether Egyptian society has finally begun creating a powerful and credible political opposition.
But liberals are uneasy about a potential partnership with the Brotherhood for obvious reasons. Ideologically, the Brotherhood as a whole is yet to reconcile its traditional emphasis on the implementation of Islamic law as the overall goal of the movement's aims with its democratic pretensions. In recent years, the movement has argued that its goal with respect to political reform is a civil state with an Islamic frame of reference.
That the Brotherhood does not have an internally well established commitment to a civil state was demonstrated by the controversy over its draft programme for a political party in late 2007. This draft included several democratic principles, such as the separation of powers, free and fair elections, and political pluralism - but it remained distinctly undemocratic on the right of women and non-Muslims to hold Egypt's highest political offices.
But the uncertainty is mutual.
A decision by the Brotherhood to more forcefully support and add its weight to ElBaradei's campaign could put the movement on a collision course with the regime. After all, the Brotherhood is still technically banned from formal politics and watched closely by the regime. Also, the petition notwithstanding, the Brotherhood is unsure about coordinating its efforts with ElBaradei's party in the next parliamentary elections or about backing ElBaradei himself should he run for the presidential elections in 2011. The Brotherhood refuses to describe its relationship with ElBaradei as an "alliance" because of unresolved ideological differences.
It will not be easy for Egyptian reformers to defeat Mubarak's regime, given its creation of a political environment that essentially forbids political competition. But there is a small chance. If the Brotherhood and the liberals come together and start a more in-depth dialogue to find common ground and resolve major differences, there might be light at the end of the tunnel. The two reformist forces may not agree on everything, but they would benefit from clarifying where they stand on critical political, economic and foreign policy issues.
If there is sufficient convergence, the Brotherhood and the liberals can move forward and implement their supporters' demands for reform. If there isn't, Egyptian society would benefit from an early divorce between the two.

Egypt through Western sunglasses

By Sanna Negus,
Jerusalem - "What is it like to live in Egypt as a Western woman?" During the years I lived in Cairo, I was often asked this question while visiting my native Finland, or when travelling outside the Middle East.
My short answer was "different".
In fact, I was asked this so many times that I decided to write a book about Egypt. I contemplated writing about how I first came to Cairo as a 22-year-old Arabic language student who hadn't travelled much and had never heard of Lonely Planet travel guidebooks. I could explain to those who asked that I was immediately captivated by the orchestrated chaos and megapolis charm, or that the city also drove me crazy at times for this very reason.
I could tell them that every time I stepped outside my door, I had to take certain precautions: no bare shoulders or knees, sunglasses to avoid eye contact with the idle men on the street, an iPod so I didn't hear the whispers of men I passed by, which usually qualified as sexual harassment. Indeed, according to a 2008 study by the Egyptian Centre for Women's Rights, 98 per cent of foreign women reported being harassed. But, more importantly, 83 per cent of Egyptian women also reported harassment, sometimes on a daily basis. This number did not change based on whether the respondent wore the hijab (headscarf) or not.
Harassment is a nuisance and sometimes a danger to all women in Cairo, and I am constantly impressed with the Egyptian women working to put an end to it. There are brave Egyptian women who are also fighting against the cultural practice of female genital mutilation, and for the right to make an individual choice about wearing the headscarf in their workplaces or universities, be elected to parliament, or be allotted custody of their children in case of divorce.
And so instead of writing about my life as a foreigner in Egypt, I decided to highlight the voices of the strong, amazing Egyptians I saw everyday and who inspired me.
Among these, feminist author Nawal el-Saadawi is perhaps the best known. She is in her 70s and still an active speaker and writer on feminism, health and politics.
Lesser known to Western audiences, but not less influential in Egypt, are Hiba Ra'uf Ezzat and Hiba Qutb. Ra'uf is a moderate Islamist affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood. She looks to Islam as a way to improve women's status. She doesn't call herself a feminist, although she espouses "feminist" values, believing that a woman can be president and that women should serve in the army.
Qutb, on the other hand, is a sexologist. She wears a headscarf and regularly appears on Arab satellite channels to discuss sexuality, surprising audiences by arguing that Islam invented foreplay.
Another woman whose courage impresses me is a young costume designer in Cairo, Hind al-Hinnawy. She became a celebrity in Egypt after demanding her estranged boyfriend, an actor with whom she had an urfi, or informal marriage, prove his paternity of their daughter. In an unprecedented scenario, she went on television to publicly share her story, and Egyptians - including the Grand Mufti Sheikh Ali Gomaa - took her side. And even when the estranged boyfriend refused to take a DNA test, the court nevertheless declared him the father.
After a two-year legal battle, her daughter, Lina, received a birth certificate and was finally recognised as an Egyptian citizen.
And it is not only contemporary Egyptian women who continue to surprise and inspire. The Egyptian Feminist Union was established in 1923 by a charismatic heiress, Huda Shaarawi only three years after the successful suffragette movement in the United States. And in the 1950s, an Egyptian feminist named Doria Shafik went on a hunger strike demanding equal rights for the country's women.
This is why, when I sat down to write a book about how I felt about living in Egypt as a foreign woman, I instead ended up providing a broader look at Egyptian society as a whole, of the Egyptians, both male and female, who defy stereotypes and create change in politics and culture, religion and economics - and who do it with a sense of humour. You cannot write about Egyptians without writing about their jokes, hence, my book Hold on to Your Veil, Fatima! was born.

To serve the nation, Hajj House prepares Muslims for IAS exams

By Rehan Ansari, Twocircles.net,
Mumbai: To serve the nation and the community is the unanimous mission of all the IAS aspirants getting trained at “Haj House” in South Mumbai. Haj Committee of India decided in August, 2009 to guide and train the talented and underprivileged Muslim graduates for the civil services examination. For the UPSC Training and Guidance Center it has spared 3 floors of the 18 story Haj House building for classes, lodging and boarding of the students.
“Problem of all the downtrodden are the same irrespective of their cast and religion” observed Syed Mohammed Javed an MBA from Mumbai. When asked why instead of a good job and handsome salary he is opting for the IAS, he replied, “It’s not about the money but I like to be a part of the system to bring about the positive change in our society.”
Ms. Nilofar Shaikh, married women with a two years son, have appeared with all the other students for the prelim exam in May, 2010 and expecting results in the first week of September, 2010. She is living in Haj house and away from her family with a dream of becoming an IAS. “My husband and in-laws are very co-operative. In fact it’s them who encouraged me to prepare for this exam.” Although she misses her kid but “one has to sacrifice” believes Nilofar.
The journey of Sabiha Zargar, M.Com from Kashmir, is very long. Earlier she was preparing for the state level Jammu Kahmir Public Service Commission, JKPSC but when came to know about the coaching and guidance center in Haj House Mumbai she changed her mind. Her father is a government servant and she believes that corruption and the communalism is the biggest threat. “For the better future we must inculcate the feelings of communal harmony among the kids and make them honest.” She might have joined the Hamdard Study Circle in Delhi but opted for Haj House in Mumbai because she feels that Mumbai is safer.

Asif Yatnal, a post graduate in science from Sholapur, dreamt of becoming an IAS since his child hood but because he is an orphan and the eldest son in the family he could not afford to do so. “It’s a dream come true for me” He exclaimed. When he came to know about the Coaching and Guidance Center in Haj House he applied along with 300 other students. “I got selected Alahamduillah. There was not a single coaching and guidance center in Mumbai for the UPSC and Haj Committee has rightly decided for it.” Mr.SAM Hashmi, Ex-Principal of Ismail Yusuf College and Akbar Peerbhoy College in Mumbai is the director of this center with the vast experience of teaching and also had introduced UPSC guidance center in Akbar Peerbhoy College in South Mumbai.
“We have provided the best quality of infrastructure like we have boarding and lodging capacities for 50 students, separate for the Girls and Boys, AC class rooms with all the modern equipments of teachings, Computer lab, Library full of related subjects and a gymnasium” explained Mr.Hashmi. Generally 2 students occupy one room with all the facilities like personal books, beds tables etc.
Out of 17 Boys and 13 Girls 7 are engineers, 5 are Post-graduates and 18 are Graduates. Most of the students belong to Maharashtra and the rest are from the other states like UP, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kashmir and Kerala.
The only thing lacking in the center is experienced teachers or guides. In Mumbai it is difficult to get good teachers for the UPSC exams. Prof. Bhushan Deshmukh, who is a visiting faculty in state run UPSC classes teaching General Studies is one of the prominent teachers in Maharashtra. Prof. Maria Gaur, Mr.Wasim, who has appeared for the Civil Services Main exams and still trying are teaching them Geography. Mr.W.S.Khan, teaching History, Mr.Atiqur Rehman from Tata Institue of sciences, Dr.Abdul Shaban from TIFR. Prof.Hashmi are the other teachers.
The admission for the next year batch has already started and the last date of submission of application is 16th August, 2010. The date of interview and written exam will be declared in a late date.

2.5 mn Muslims threaten to leave Facebook

By IANS,
London: More than 2.5 million Muslims have threatened to quit Facebook after four Islamic pages were taken down, reports said Friday.
A template letter that has been pasted into numerous Facebook pages accuses founder Mark Zuckerberg and other senior members of Facebook of "ignoring the feelings of more than 2.5 million Muslims", the Daily Mail reported on its website.
The Muslim community is angry that four extremely popular Islamic pages including "I love Mohammed" and "Quran Lovers" were removed from the site and the letter warns that unless the pages are reinstated, Facebook's Muslim users will move to an Islamic alternative.
The letter also demands that new rules are introduced which make it a violation of Facebook's terms to post anti-Islamic comments.
Facebook has been given notice that unless the changes are introduced, 2.5 million Muslim users will leave to join madina.com, a social networking site for Muslims.
The letter reads: "Although you have attended the world's best communication skills courses you have been most successful in growing great hatred and hostility between you and Muslims around the world, but seriously this time you have caused an almost unrepairable damage."
It also accuses Facebook of "irresponsible behaviour" for allowing to host "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" pages which sparked controversy for encouraging users to draw portraits of the Prophet.
There is no specific ban on images of Allah or the Prophet Mohammed in the Koran but there is one line which is commonly taken to mean that it is impossible for human hands to recreate his likeness. To attempt to do so would is an insult to Allah, it is believed.
The letter demands that the four deleted pages be reinstated, disrespecting Islamic religious symbols be banned and any Facebook page which does so be disabled.
Madina.com, a social networking site set up specifically for the Muslim community, pledges to abide by the "highest Islamic principles" and encourages Muslim unity. Female users are asked not to use pictures of themselves as profile pictures.
According to Facebook the four Islamic pages were taken down because they were being used to spam users, which is against the company's policy.
The pages were using a JavaScript code that when entered in the address bar, would add all a user's friends to the page suggestions - making it similar to spamming people across Facebook.
A spokeswoman for Facebook said: "The pages in question were taken down because they violated our policies about spamming users. These pages were not removed because of content violations."
