Florence Nightingale is the physical embodiment of nursing. Through her own will she changed the way nursing was done. She applied her knowledge of statistics to help understand what was causing the horrible conditions in war hospitals in the Crimean War. Though it was pretty clear the lack of food, cleanliness, and staffing were contributing to the problems, she looked deeper. Her intellect coupled with her desire to care for people made her something of an angel to those she cared for.
Her work did not end in the Crimea though. She returned with advice for Queen Victoria on improvements to be made in England and started a school of nursing. Her work made her internationally famous but she never stopped working for the sick and poor.
You can read about her life here.
