1,000 PEACE-LOVING HONG KONG CITIZENS PROTESTED AGAINST &
CONDEMNED ISRAEL ’S USE OF FORCE AGAINST PEACE FLOTILLA
(7 June 2010, Hong Kong ) HONG KONG is a cosmopolitan city. More than one thousand peace-loving Hong Kong citizens stood together and condemned the use of blatant force by Israel against a humanitarian mission that was on its way solely for the purpose of delivering humanitarian aid to the besieged Palestinian people in Gaza.
The protest gathering started at 2 P.M. at the Victoria Park, Causeway Bay. The organizers invited journalist Ms. Susanna Cheung, who was on the peace flotilla, to talk about the situation in Gaza. Ms. Cheung said: ‘I had been to Gaza and I saw the people in Gaza are seriously lack of medical aid, food and other basic needs. Delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza is absolutely necessary.’ The organizers also gave a long distance call to contact the Media Manager of IHH, the organization whose peace flotilla was attacked on 31 May. Responding to the long distance call from Hong Kong, Ms. Zehra Ovturk of IHH said, ‘The Israeli troops arrived on our vessel by helicopters at around 4 A .M., members of the peace mission were either sleeping or performing their prayers. They were unarmed and fired under cover of darkness.’
The protest group started to march for the Consulate General of Israel at 2:30 P.M. The marchers were expressing slogans: ‘WE WANT PEACE’, ‘FREE GAZA’ ‘HUMANITY COMES FIRST’ etc. The event’s spokesperson, Ms. Basmah Lok said that the protest is arranged to increase the awareness about Gaza and Palestine ’s problem in general amongst the Hong Kong people. Israel has blockaded Gaza for 3 years leaving the 1.5 million innocent people there without food and medicine. These innocent people are left on the mercy of NGOs. The attack absolutely carried neither any legality nor any rationality. It was an absolutely inhuman act of state terrorism.
The protest marchers reached Admiralty Centre at 4 P.M. As the office of the Consulate General of Israel refused to receive the condemnation letter signed by 13 community organizations, the protest group announced their declarations and decided that the letter of condemnation would be sent to the Consulate by register mail. The protest group dismissed peacefully at 4:30 P.M.
